Lightweight 400mm large aperture professional lens with 5 stop image stabilization
Weighing significantly less (1 010g lighter) than its predecessor, the EF400mm f/2.8L IS III USM boasts improved mobility and portability, making it an excellent addition to a professional photographer’s kit especially for avid sports, bird and wildlife photographers. The use of ASC (Air Sphere Coating) provides images with high apparent resolution and contrast, and the improved 5-stop in-lens image stabilization (IS) helps to capture even sharper shots. In addition to the L-lens staple dust-proof, drip-proof structure and fluorine coating, the lens features a new heat shield coating that helps prevent the lens from overheating when shooting in the hot sun.

The high image quality you would expect from a flagship lens
The use of 2 fluorite and 1 Super UD lens elements correct chromatic aberration, removing one of the last hindrances to ideal image quality on a super telephoto lens and achieving stunning visual resolution and overall contrast. The EF400mm f/2.8L IS III USM also newly features Canon’s own Air Sphere Coating (ASC) technology, which incorporates air with a lower refractive index than optical glass into the coating, forming an ultra-low refractive layer that suppresses lens flare and ghosting.
Significantly reduced weight, professional-friendly operability
The lens achieves stunningly sharp, high-contrast images amid a body that, at 2 840g, weighs 25% lighter than its predecessor. Built to ensure durability and convenience even when shooting for long hours outdoors, it newly features a heat-shield coating to prevent overheating under the hot sun, in addition to fluorine coating on the lens surface to prevent dirt and stains from sticking and a dust-proof, drip-proof structure. The controls have also been improved for enhanced operability, with the likes of a new manual focus speed switch and a customizable electronic focusing ring that offers 3 levels of manual focusing speed to match the amount of rotation by the focusing ring.
5 stop IS, 2.5m closest focusing distance
Image stabilization (IS) has been significantly improved to 5 stops, with 3 versatile IS modes available, including IS Mode 2 for panning, and IS Mode 3 for unpredictable movement—created in response to popular demand from sports photographers. This, together with the drastically lighter lens body, expands the range of scenes that you can shoot by hand. A reduction in closest focusing distance to 2.5m from 2.7m on the predecessor allows you to shoot closer to your subjects while retaining same high image quality.
